So yeah I’m starting a new stream of game reviews on games you may have missed and should be picked up. We start with Castle Crashers!
Oh yes! It’s been such a long time since I can say I have finally found a game as challenging and as satisfying as Castle Crashers. An Indy sidescroller game with RPG elements, it takes the best from fighting games of the 80s and early 90s and turns it on its head with slick humor and fantastic graphics!
This guy is such a badass! Just look at the lightning coming out his face!
Well, first things first the story , it has that same generic feel of Mario games , princess is captured and you must go and save her, as well as an ancient relic of some sort. You along with the king and his knights, as well as up to four player online or offline must save the day. But just imagine at the end of the castle you’re saving many princesses instead of just one and Mario and Luigi have a fight to the death to kiss Princess Peach! This does actually happen, if there is more than one of you playing and you defeat a boss and save the princess you then must battle each other to find out who gets the kiss, just don’t waste your health potions over this!
First thing you will notice about this game is its remarkable resemblance to the way golden axe or streets of rage plays, as well as few movie references here and there!
Its humor is crude, clever and kept fresh throughout and the music is just as dramatic, such as a deer who literally shits itself so much it pushes itself off the screen, theirs even bosses who don’t even fit on the screen and fun mini games along the way! The boss fights take me back to the SNES days and Megadrive where bosses took some thinking , you would need to memorise there moves and strike at just the right time , the last game to do this for me was demon souls. Each boss has its own tricky way of been beaten and power ups help along the way. These consist of potions, sandwiches that make you double in size and other weapons. You can collect your own more powerful swords along the way, and each character has its own set of magic and moves. You choose from strength agility defense and magic !
The RPG elements is great it keeps you coming back for more over and over again , the more you level up the more weapons you can gain access to and the more ability’s. You can replay older levels to grind and get that XP up at any time , or why not take a break and have some free for all in the arena or a game of volleyball , wonder if they were inspired by tekken ball on tekken 3?
This game is played best with numerous players either online or offline , although now as the game has been out so long it takes a while to find those who are online , so I chose to play offline locally with a friend. This is how the game is best played with multiple players for the different scenarios along the way! A good mix of magic , agility , strength and defence work best. This hardness and teamwork needed in this game is tense at times , often needing to quickly revive your fallen team mate with timed button presses before that boss gets another hit on you, trust me you will have sweaty palms after the battles in this game!
I would say though the difficulty on your own on this game is tricky , I often wonder if they even decrease or increase the enemies difficulty the more or less players. It seems the same on your own than when you team up with somebody!
Oh did I say you can get pet bats, rams and ride a lizard … or a corpse in the water, fuck I love this game!
Yes I have a lightsaber and a head of a ram as a pet!
Its £10.99 on PS Store , and probably around the same on Xbox , its much cheaper on steam. Honestly I got more than 10 pounds out of this game and I can see how it won so many awards!
So yeah check it out!
